How to use
Substrate preparation
The surfaces to be sealed should be clean, dry, stable and degreased. Before applying the sealant, clean non-porous surfaces with DOWSIL™ R-40 Universal Cleaner and dry thoroughly with a clean, lint-free cloth. Porous materials such as concrete, brick, mortar, etc. should be mechanically cleaned of loose particles using a wire brush, grinding wheel or similar methods.
Masking. Securing
Masking tape should be used in areas adjacent to joints to protect materials from contamination and to ensure a straight seal contour. The masking tape must be removed immediately after the joint is finished.
Underlay
Primers are not usually required, but may be recommended on certain surfaces for the best adhesion.
Finish Curing time
The applied sealant should be machined within 5 minutes of application to ensure good contact between sealant and material. The joint treatment also gives it a smooth, professional look.
Cleaning
Uncured excess sealant can be removed from tools and non-porous surfaces with DOWSIL™ R-40 Universal Cleaner. If the sealant is improperly applied to a porous material, allow it to cure, then remove it by peeling, cutting, or other mechanical means. Avoid damaging plastic or coated surfaces.
Connector design
The width of the sealing joint should take into account the possibility of movement of the sealant. When forming a joint with DOWSIL™ 813C Construction and Concrete Silicone Sealant, the minimum width should be 6 mm. For joints 6-12 mm wide, the required sealing depth is 6 mm. For joints with a width of more than 12 mm, it is recommended to maintain a 2:1 ratio between width and depth. If a fillet joint is required, it is recommended that a minimum of 6mm of sealant be applied to each surface. For connectors wider than 25mm or deeper than 15mm, please contact your local technical office.
