Molybdenum disulfide MoS2 0.85μm
Additive to oils and greases
Product packaged by eLUBE by ABS Serwis
- Composition: Molybdenum disulfide
- Formula: MoS2 powder
Molybdenum disulfide is an inorganic compound with a hexagonal layered structure, composed of molybdenum and sulfur. Its chemical formula is MoS2.
It is a universal black powder mainly used as an anti-friction and anti-wear additive.
Molybdenum competes with other solids, including primarily graphite and hexagonal boron nitride. Thanks to its low friction properties, which are superior to those of graphite, as well as its high load capacity and the fact that it is relatively non-reactive, it is resistant to dilute acids and oxygen. MoS2 does not depend on adsorbed water or other vapors for its lubricating properties.
It can be used at temperatures up to 450ºC in oxidizing environments and up to 1100ºC in non-oxidizing environments. Its stability makes it useful in high temperature and high vacuum applications where other conventional greases and oils fail.
Usually molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is available in super fine, technical fine, technical and high molecular weight.
The offered Molybdenum Disulfide is a very fine pure, selected, ratified MoS2 0.85 μm powder.
Applications Application
- Lubricant additive
- Additive to oils
- Additive to polymers
- Addition to other sliding coatings
- petrochemical desulfurization catalyst
- for the production of hydrogen for fuel cell applications
- for the production of semiconductors
MoS2 is also used as an anti-friction coating for applications where load capacity, working pressure and low coefficient of friction are most important. This coating provides effective lubrication over a wide range of loads, in many cases exceeding 250,000 psi. Molybdenum coatings sacrificially lubricate, transferring lubricant between the two mating surfaces, helping to reduce wear and coefficient of friction.
Coatings with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) form the so-called dry lubricating film.

Application in the automotive industry
Molybdenum disulfide has gained great popularity as a lubricant used to lubricate engines, gearboxes and other parts of the automotive industry.
It is added to engine oils (to reduce friction between the piston skirt and cylinder liner) and gear oils where boundary lubrication is much more common. The small granulation of the grain means that it is not caught by any filters, mixes with all oils and can be used in all types of engines.
With MoS2, all parts inside the engine will be able to move with less stress and strain. This means they won't require as much fuel. Another benefit is that by reducing friction, you also reduce heat. Oil-soluble molybdenum compounds such as thiocarbamates also provide protection against oxidation in the engine.
It works very well in high-performance cars with high overloads and temperature.
Features and Benefits of using the Mos2 additive:
- It significantly reduces friction, preventing the so-called cold start.
- It reduces the operating temperature and engine wear, extending its life.
- It will mix combustion because the resistance during engine operation is lower.
- Silences the operation of the engine or gearbox.
- Reduces oil losses by supplementing micro-pitting at piston-cylinder connections.
Method of application
MoS2 as a powder to make a suspension, it is best to spread it in oil, and then apply to the engine or gearbox in the following proportions:
- for the engine, on average, 2-5g / 1 liter of oil, (10g is enough for 4-5 liters of engine oil)
- for gearbox 10-20g / 1 liter (10g is enough for 2 liters of gear oil)
The suspension should be used on a warm engine and after application, wait 5-7 minutes at idle in order to uniformly distribute the additive.
Molybdenum disulfide should not be used in new engines due to the thin lubricating film, so that the sealing does not occur below the values recommended by the manufacturer. For new cars with it is better to use liquid molybdenum disulfide.
