How to use
Substrate preparation
Make sure that the surfaces to be sealed are clean, dry, sound and degreased. Clean non-porous surfaces with DOWSIL™ R-40 Universal Cleaner and dry thoroughly with a clean, lint-free cloth before applying the sealer.
Porous substrates such as concrete, brick, mortar, etc. should be mechanically cleaned of loose particles using a steel brush, grinding wheel or other similar means.
Primers are not required but may be useful for some specific substrates
Safeguard
Areas adjacent to joints must be masked with tape to prevent contamination of substrates and to ensure a neat sealing line. Masking tape should be removed immediately after processing.
Curing time
The joint should be machined within 5 minutes of application to ensure good contact between the sealant and the substrate. The sealant treatment also gives a smooth, professional finish.
Connector design
When designing joints using DOWSIL™ 791 Silicone Weathering Sealant, the minimum width should be 6 mm. For joints wider than 12 mm, a width to depth ratio of 2:1 should be used. In situations where fillet welds are required, a minimum of 6mm of sealant per substrate is recommended. For joint dimensions greater than 25 mm wide or greater than 15 mm deep, please contact your regional service center for technical assistance.
